Skinny Guy Campers are built to last!

Aluminum Exoskeleton Body

We designed our campers with inspiration from nature.  Just like an insect’s body has an exoskeleton, so does a Skinny Guy Camper. Skinny Guy Campers uses .125 aluminum sheets throughout, including the interior benches and storage.  This makes the camper’s tough outer shell dent and corrosion-resistant also making it nearly 2x as thick as comparable products in the market.

Stainless Steel Tent Bows and Hardware

Unlike other rooftop tents in the industry, which use aluminum or galvanized steel for their tent bows, SGC uses high quality, extremely strong 1” diameter, .065” wall 304 stainless steel tubing for the tent bows and 316 stainless steel hardware to tie the system together.

Grades 304 and 316 stainless steel both contain high amounts of chromium and nickel, giving them excellent corrosion resistance. The strength and excellent formability of 304 stainless steel make it the perfect material for our tent bows. We found this material extremely difficult to bend, so we used a CNC tube bending machine. The added strength and hardness of 316 stainless steel ensures tough and durable hardware. Together, they ensure that SGC’s bow system resists corrosion and performs well in high wind conditions. Although it was very noisy, we spent several nights in the campers with sustained winds of 40-50 mph. Need we say more?

The decision to use stainless steel versus aluminum or galvanized bows was inspired by a windy boat ride on a high-end Bowrider. During the ride, we observed the boat’s 10’ Bimini top holding up like a champ to 44mph cruising speed and a stiff headwind. We made it our goal to ensure the bow system could withstand the high wind conditions that users are most likely to encounter.

Aqualon® Edge Tent Material

As one of the few parts that can eventually wear out, the camper’s tent is designed to be removable and replaceable. We needed the fabric to be durable and light with great wind- and water resistance. Aqualon® Edge fabric has been used successfully for years in high-end marine applications. When designing the camper, we knew the tent needed to be a single layer to fit within the compact space. In addition to its stellar tear- and water resistance, the material’s white backing provides good light transference giving the camper interior a cavernous feeling. On sunny days even in cold weather, the sun’s heat transfers quite well into the interior.

Marine Mat® Flooring

SGC uses Marine Mat® brand flooring. Since the floor can get quite dirty during off-road adventures, we took inspiration from the boating industry and chose durable set-in flooring that is removable and replaceable.

Powder Coated Components

Unless ordered uncoated for third-party paint or wrap, all of the main components of the camper’s structure are powder coated before the body is assembled. This ensures all components are evenly coated and helps prevent galvanic corrosion between the stainless steel and aluminum components and fasteners.

CNC Precision Cut Components

All of SGC’s major components are CNC laser cut, then bent on a precision brake press using state-of-the-art computer-guided processes. This process ensures that every Skinny Guy Camper is built to our exacting quality specifications.

Stainless Steel Hinges

All the hinge points used by SGC are 316 Stainless Steel. These hinges are designed and made in the United States and are tailored for us. After looking at different options, we chose the 316 Stainless Steel for its excellent durability and extreme weather resistance for any climate condition. We’re confident this type of hardware will last the lifetime of your camper.

All Stainless Steel Hardware and Fasteners

We use all stainless steel hardware and fasteners to assemble your Skinny Guy Camper. Closed-end and sealed rivets are used along with industrial body adhesive to assemble the individual panels. We use around 700 stainless steel rivets for each camper. There are a few weldments throughout; however, the majority of the assembly is bonded and riveted.
